‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my
family, you did it to me’ (Mathew 25:40)
A society can be called civilized or cultured only when it caters to the least members in it.
Fifty years ago a group of like-minded people came together, put their heads together and
conceived a Special School for the differently abled. They did this at a time when these
children were considered as a burden and bane for families and society. Understanding
the need of the hour and gravity of the situation the Archdiocese of Changanacherry took
a bold decision to start a school for the differently abled.
Mar Joseph Powathil, the then Auxiliory Bishop of Changanacherry with the blessings of
the then Archbishop Mar. Antony Padiyara played the lead role in establishing the
school. Mar Joseph Powathil was ably assisted by Fr. Flex CMI and a committed team of
nuns under the leadership of Sr.Elite CMC. The vision of the founding fathers were so
lofty that they sent the team to different established Institutions for training.
The Archdiocese allotted 2.5 acres of land at Ithithanam, a suburb of Changanacherry.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 th Nov 1972 and the School was inaugurated in 1973.
Ever since its inauguration the school has been accepted by the needy and so far 1126
children have utilized the service of the school. The CMC Sisters were given charge of
the school from its beginning. The Asha Bhavan is a registered body in the General
Education Dept. Govt. of Kerala and it is also registered under National Trust Act for the
welfare of the disabled.
